WADHURST ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY
The last meeting of the society was held on September 17. The speaker was Neil Bone and the subject of the talk was 'Atmospheric Phenomena'. The talk began with a series of slides showing local atmospheric phenomena, clouds!
The talk itself was very well illustrated with slides of many atmospheric phenomena including: Perihelia (Sun Dogs), Noctilucent clouds, Auroral activity and Meteors.
Neil also pointed out the difficulties with photographing some of these phenomena. For every good photo, he had acres of duff film. He also predicted that, unfortunately, this year's Leonids would be disappointing because of the presence of the moon.
The next meeting of the society will be on Wednesday October 15 2003. As usual, the doors open at 7.15 and the meeting starts at 7.30 prompt.
The evening is the society's Mars Extravaganza, and the evening is planned as an open public evening as well as a members evening. The timetable for the evening has been scheduled as follows:
7:30 Doors open
7:15 Introduction by Murray Barber
7:50 Presentation by Greg Smye-Rumsby
8:20 Tea Break (also telescope set up time)
8:45 Presentation continues
9:15 Presentation concludes
The observation will then commence (with a back-up presentation if skies do not permit observing).
Any member who wishes to bring a telescope for the observation part of the evening is most welcome to do so. It would also be useful if members could bring red torches with them for use during the observation.
The event has been well publicised locally and it is hoped that we will have a good turn out from the public as well as the membership.
If anyone feels that they can offer the use of a telescope or feels that they can help in any other way on the evening please contact Murray on 01892 654618 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
The annual WAS Barbecue was held on Saturday August 30. Thanks to Michael and his wife for making the evening yet another enjoyable one.
The evening was well attended and apparently there was some observing done on the evening. Tim's latest acquisition seems to have made an impression on many members.
Annual Subscriptions are due on 1st November for the year 2003-04. The committee would be very grateful if members could help reduce the time the process takes by printing and filling in this renewal form and returning it with their cheque to the Treasurer at Broadwater Lodge, Stone Cross Road, Wadhurst, E Sussex, TN5 6LR.

As some members are no doubt aware, the current editor of the Newsletter is unable to attend the society's meetings, and is therefore thinking about whether to renew his subscription to the society for the coming year. For this reason, he feels that it would be better if another member came forward to take on the role. If anyone feels they have the urge to take on the role, please make their interest known to Murray (01892 654618). The current editor would be very pleased to answer any queries by any member (01732 368656 or email@example.com).
