"The Day Wadhurst Changed"

The Day Wadhurst Changed

Produced to mark the 50th anniversary of the crash of an RAF Meteor jet aircraft, in which the pilot and navigator and two civilans were killed, this book builds on offical records, old newsreel footage and local journalists' records and photos, together with first had records from local residents of all ages, who witnessed the crash and its aftermath.

Written by 3 members of the Society and copiously illustrated, the book charts the heroism of those involved, the amazing performance of the manager of the International Stores in opening a complete new store within 16 hours, and explores the reasons for the crash and the appalling delays in rebuilding, replacing a medieval timber-framed building adn an Elizabethan tile-hung hotel with a 1950's shopping parade
